 Wednesday!

Today in writing Mrs. Taylor's wrote about Terry Fox. We wrote about why he is a Canadian hero, why he ran across Canada, how he felt and what we think about Terry Fox.

Ms. MacDonald's class used the following picture to write about what we saw. We began to think about how we could describe what is in a photo.

In Math, Mrs. Taylor's class create a 100s chart pattern with our name. Tomorrow we will be looking for the other patterns that emerged.
Ms. MacDonald's class discussed what an attribute is. Ask me to share the attribute of a shape tonight.

In Health, Mrs. Taylor's continued looking at our Healthy Habits. Today we did Healthy Habit #2 which is about setting goals and having a plan.
We first looked at the goal setting - the very beginning stages.
We came up with 3 goals - things that we want to learn and get better at.
- Thomas: tricks at basketball, writing stories and batting the ball
- Taylor: painting, drawing pictures and rollerblade

Magnetic Tuesday

 Happy Tuuuuuesday families!

Today in writing Ms. MacDonald's class wrote about themselves in preparation for an art project that they worked on in the afternoon.

Mrs. Taylor's class spent time learning about Terry Fox. Together we brainstormed all the thing that we know and learned about Terry Fox.
Here is what we came up with

Tomorrow we will be writing about Terry Fox.

In math Mrs. Taylor's and Ms. MacDonald's class worked on a pattern word problem. Ask me how many different patterns I could make with the colors blue, green, red. Ask me to make you a pattern with those colors. Ask me how many elements are in the pattern.

In Science we continued our magnet exploration.
Mrs. Taylor's class completed an experiment to show attract and repel - ask me what poles attract and what ones repel.
We then went outside to learn about the true magnetic north and south .... but then it got super windy outside so we decided the experiment would no longer work. We will try again tomorrow..

Important Reminders:

1. Google Meet: Today at 4:00

2. Conferences: on Sept 24th and 25th

3. Google Classroom: Over the next week we will be transition to google classroom where information about the class and assignment will be posted.

Monday September 21st

 Happy Monday Families!

In writing today Ms. MacDonald's class learned about Terry Fox and thought about what makes him a Canadian Hero. Ask me about what makes Terry Fox a Canadian Hero.

In writing Ms. Taylor class wrote about one of our imagination ideas and WOW did we do an amazing job! Our writing eventually turned into little mini stories! We were focuing on adding more DETAIL to our writing and to tell MORE.
Ask me what I wrote about today - was it about a pet dino, candyland, a world where everything cost a penny, a pet that talks, unicorn shoes....

In Math we continued to look at patterns, focusing on elements. We can all make a simple 2-element pattern such as blue-green-blue-green, however, can we make it more interesting/intricate?
We are working on starting patterns and also completing patterns that have already been started - knowing the core of the pattern helps us with this.
Question - Can you make a 1-element pattern?
Next, we will be moving onto attributes.

In Social studies we continued to look at our world and started looking at our community, New Brighton.

Mrs. Taylor's class spent some time this morning learning how to login to our school lap tops. We then learned how to login to our google acct using our educbe.ca email and then into our google classroom.

Thursday Sept. 17

 Happy Thursday!

We began our morning working on vowel endings - ed and en.

In math we looked at the patterns that we see on our 100s chart, specifically when we are counting by 2s and 5s. We challenged each other by picking a number (that we would say) and counting by 2s or 5s starting at that number. For example, "can you count by 5s starting at 65?" Ms. MacDonald's class also worked on skip counting by 10's
Can you help me skip count aloud by 2s, 5s and 10's? If you have a 100s chart at home that would help as well.

In writing we worked on our final brain pocket - and the most fun one - our Imagination or Memory  Pocket.
- Mrs. Taylor's class watched the story, Imagine a Place, and then brainstormed some imaginative ideas together that we would want to write a story about.
- Mrs. MacDonald's class wrote about a memory they had. Ask me about my memory writing today.

Mrs. Taylor's class started a new art project. We started off writing about ourselves - what we love to eat, what we do not like to eat, our favourite color, our favourite part about us, our favourite animal etc
We then painted a colourful background, added a cool picture of ourselves and glued those facts about us around us.
We will be using this art as our visual journal cover.
The art was still a bit wet when these pics were taken...

Ms. MacDonald's class learned how to log on to our school laptops. We then spent time learning how to login to our GoogleAccount and how to get onto our google classroom. We had to use our school email (@edu.ab.ca) and a new password (ask me what it is) to get onto our google classroom.

Have a great evening!

Reminders:
- If you have not returned your child's demographic form please do so tomorrow or Monday at the latest. Thank you!

Wednesday Sept. 16

Today in Physical Education we continued to get ready for the Terry Fox run by practicing our running.

In writing Ms. MacDonald's class worked on their memory pockets. They listened to Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge then shared some of the memories they have. Take sometime to share some of memories with each other.

In math we practiced counting by 5's. Tonight you can practice counting by 5's with me. Here is a song to help.

In math we also looked closely at patterns. We came up with a class definition of a pattern and then looked at what an attribute is.
Can you tell me what the attribute(s) of these patterns are (what characteristics are the same)?

In science we started learning about the different types of magnets. We learned what a horseshoe, wand, bar and ring magnet are. We also learned that they have a North and a South Pole.
Mrs. Taylor's class did a mini experiment. We created a scientific page and recorded what items we thought would be attracted to a magnet: nail, metal lid, cork, plastic spoon and the top part of a pencil.
What did I learn from this experiment? What is attracted to a magnet?

Reminders:
1. Demographic forms: Thank you to everyone who has handed in their forms. If you have not had a chance please hand it in ASAP. Thank you.

2. Conferences: Please sign up for a conference time through the booking system.

Tuesday Sept. 15

 Good afternoon!

Today we started our morning off with a table job. Mrs. Taylor's class worked on patterns and Ms. MacDonald's class played guess my number with a partner.

In writing we worked on another one of our brain pocket writing jobs.
Mrs. Taylor's class used the list that they made yesterday about all the things that they know about to complete their writing job.
Students completed a sentence starter and then wrote at least 2 facts that they know about a topic of their choice.
Ask me what fact I wrote about.

Ms. MacDonald's class wrote creative ideas from their imagination pockets. Ask me about what I wrote.

In math today we continued to look at patterns - this time focusing on the CORE of the pattern.
We are doing such a fantastic job with repeating patterns! Many of us are creating 3 & 4 element patterns!

In social studies we are beginning to look at My home and took sometime to find our homes on google earth.

Reminders:
1. Demographic forms: please return as soon as possible.
2. Conferences: Are Sept 24th and 25th. Please take sometime to book your time through the conference booking system.

Monday Sept. 14

 Happy Monday!

In writing today each class worked on another brain pocket page. Mrs. Taylor's class worked on their Fact Pocket and Ms. MacDonald's class worked on their Imagination Pocket Page.
We will use these pages during free write time and during our literacy blocks.

In math we continued to look for patterns on the 100s chart again - this time we put our skip counting skills to the test! We looked at the number patterns that we see when counting by 2s on the 100s chart.
Can you work with me on skip counting aloud by 2s?

In science we started our investigation into magnets!
Many of us had fun this weekend looking for items around our house that magnets stick to! It was so fun to go over those today!
We then went around our classroom looking for items that are magnetic and items that are not.
Ask me what 3 things I found that we magnetic and what 3 were not magnetic.

Magnetic Wands at Lakeshore Learning

Unexpected Fire Drill

This afternoon we had an unexpected fire drill and the grade 2 students did a fantastic job at exiting the classroom and standing quietly in line outside!

Mrs. Taylor's and Ms. MacDonald's class had music - ask me what we learned in music today.

Modern Music Notes Brush Pack - Free Photoshop Brushes at Brusheezy!

Friday Sept. 11

 Happy, Happy Friday!!

Mrs. Taylor's class began their morning with a number talk. We started to look into taking apart a number and identifying the ones place and the tens place. We then played a class game of "Guess my number" focusing on asking more specific questions such as, "is it between ___ and ___?", "does it have a ___ in the tens place?"
We then played the game with our desk partner.

In writing, Ms. MacDonald's class listened to the books This is not a Stick and This is not a box then they used their imagination to turn a box into something and wrote about it.

We have P.E outside today. Ask me what we are working on in P.E this week.

Mrs. Taylor's class continued working on their "7 Healthy Habits" page in our visual journal.
Today we focused on Habit #1 - Be Proactive. Ask me what this means.

Ms. MacDonald's class continued to work on their masked portraits. Ask me about the words I used to describe my character.

Magnet homework: Today we began to discuss what we know and wonder about magnets. Take some time over the weekend to use a magnet form your fridge and find 5 things that are magnetic in your house. Email you teacher the pictures of your five magnetic items.

Important Reminders:

- If you have not done so already, please return your signed and demographic forms by Monday September 14th at the latest.

Thursday Sept. 10

 Happy Thursday!

We started our morning off with table time where we completed a colour by numbers on a 100s chart. This worked on number order and decoding colour words.

In Math, we did a number talk on patterns and brainstormed different 2 and 3 element patterns. We also talked about the core of the pattern and how that is the part that repeats.
We then did a quick "show what you know" so that Mrs. Taylor and Ms. MacDonald could see what we already know about patterns and where we can move to.

In the afternoon we took our pattern work outside and created patterns in nature with Ms. MacDonald's class.

In writing, Mrs. Taylor's class completed their first "Think Outside of the Box" writing task.
Ask me what I turned my "box" into and what I wrote about.

In writing Ms. MacDonald's class chose and idea from their fact pocket to write about. We worked on sharing several ideas.

7 Healthy Habits - In health Ms. Taylors class began looking at the first of the seven healthy habits. "Be proactive. We discussed how we can advocate for ourselves by being poractive.

In art. Ms. MacDonald's class started working on their masked portraits. If you would like to try this at home feel free to watch the video.

Important Reminders:

Wednesday Sept. 9

 Good afternoon Grade 2 families!

We started our morning off practising our printing. We took our time to show that we could neatly print the letters of the alphabet, both upper and lower case. During this time Mrs. MacDonald and Mrs. Taylor called students over to read with them.

In Math we began our investigation into the 100s chart. We started off by looking for any patterns that we noticed. Ask me what I know about the 100s chart. We then filled in our own 100s chart to keep in our math duotang.
We will be spending the next while looking closely at the 100s chart, making 10, number patterns and number talks - we are really excited to dive in!

In writing Mrs. Taylor's class used their Memory Pocket to write about a happy memory. Ask me what happy memory I chose to write about.

Mrs. MacDonald's class created their Fact Pocket. We watched a quick video and then shared the different facts or things that we know a lot about. We then wrote them down in our Fact Pocket so that we can refer to them during writing time.
Ask me what I chose for my facts.

In the afternoon, Mrs. Taylor's class began their self portrait. However, this is not any ordinary self-portrait but rather one that shows us with and without a mask on. We also filled it with adjectives (oooh, ask me what an adjective is!) that describe our personality and ourselves.

Mrs. MacDonald's class began working on a visual journal page that helps remind us why we physically distance ourselves. Here is a video we used to fold our physically distanced people. Some of us may want to try this again at home.

Important Reminders:

- Demographic forms went home today. Please read them over carefully, sign and return by Friday Sept. 11th

 Windy Tuesday!

Great work continually dressing for the weather, Grade 2s!

We started our morning off with table time. Today's "I can" was to demonstrate as many different patterns as we could think of.
Later in the afternoon we went outside in search of patterns in our world.

Here are some that we found:

Can you find any patterns at home? Email your teacher a picture.

This morning was a chilly one and we were outside for both P.E. and recess today. We are getting ready for our virtual Terry Fox Run.

In writing we listened to the book, The Invisible Boy and wrote about what we want our teachers and classmates to know about us.

We had our first virtual assembly today! Ask me about the people we met
